School Year Program

READ’s School Year Reading Program takes place over approximately fifteen weeks during the school year and provide forty-five minutes of one-on-one tutoring for a minimum of four times per week. Each child receives a minimum of forty-five hours of one-on-one reading instruction during the course of the program. All READ tutoring sessions employ the Reading for All Learners Program (RALP) research-based curriculum for beginning readers and focus on building phonemic awareness, text decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. Tutors in READ’s School Year Reading Program are teen volunteers that are either older students within the same school as the children they tutor or are recruited from local high schools. READ provides for the recruitment and training of Lead Teachers; the recruitment and training of tutors; curriculum materials; evaluation and ongoing support to sites (e.g. setup, instructional support and troubleshooting).

READ’s Summer Reading Program takes place over a five-week period during July and August and includes instructional sessions every weekday. Instructional sessions are four hours long and include two forty-five minute one-on-one tutoring sessions as well as supplemental literacy related activities (i.e. small group reading related to a theme of the week, journal writing and art activities). Each child receives 100 hours of support including 37.5 hours of one-on-one tutoring. During READ’s Summer Reading Program, tutors are paid. Teens who have volunteered in the School Year Reading Program and who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and professionalism are selected to fill these positions.

Build Your Future

In 2008, READ launched Build Your Future program, designed to provide teen tutors with some of the skills necessary to build their own futures, as they are working to build the futures of their young tutees.  Build Your Future teens participate in a variety of interactive workshops and experiential field trips to develop career and college prep skills.

READ is seeking corporate and community volunteers to participate in its Build Your Future program for teens.  Workshops can be presented at a READ school or in a corporate office using READ curriculum or an appropriate curriculum chosen by the volunteer.  Training will be provided by READ and the trainer will work side-by-side with a READ staff member to assure successful delivery.
