The Reading for All Learners Program is aligned with current reading research, and the recommendations of the National Reading Panel. The initial reading instruction addresses phonemic awareness. Using a small number of phonemes, the program focuses on key phonemic skills, such as phoneme identification, categorization, blending, and segmentation. To ensure the development, reinforcement, and mastery of these early skills, the associated reading applications in the decodable “little books” systematically limit irregular words in early reading experiences. After automaticity in blending is achieved, the irregular words are substantively increased to meet student needs in general recreational reading experiences.
Each book begins with a review of sounds and an introduction of new sounds, followed by a review of words and an introduction of new words. These sounds and words are then used in the text of the story, facilitating the mastery of those components and increasing reading fluency. In addition, comprehension questions of increasing difficulty are embedded in each book, encouraging the students to be active readers.
