Leadership, Community Service and Employment Opportunities for Teens
READ provides teen tutors with appropriate training and ongoing supervision so that they can meet the needs of struggling young readers. Tutors report that they learn “patience,” “persistence,” and “creativity” while tutoring for READ. They also have the personal satisfaction of seeing their students make a year’s growth in reading. READ tutors gain valuable work experience as they earn community service hours, letters of recommendation, and paid summer jobs. Some develop an interest in teaching or other helping professions. Tutors who demonstrate leadership skills may qualify for a Lead Tutor position, in which they assist the READ teacher in facilitating a successful READ tutoring program.
School Partnerships
READ works with each partner school to provide targeted early intervention to the right students at the right time in their lives. READ tutoring is overseen by teachers who have a thorough grounding in the READ curriculum and methodology. They model correct procedures and monitor student progress. Because READ tutoring focuses on reinforcement of basic reading skills, classroom teachers are able to concentrate on more sophisticated vocabulary and comprehension development with the whole class. |
